Volvo Turn Signals
Do They Cancel? |
|

This may sound like a dumb question, but are the turn signals on the gen 2 Volvo's supposed to cancel when you turn back from a turn? Mine don't and I don't want to start tearing into the steering column if the turn signals are not broken. If this has been asked before I am sorry. I could not find it in a search. |
HERO Maker 14 March 2010 08:19 PM |
Stop searching and don't start on the steering column either. You will have to turn them off yourself. |

I wondered if there was a canceling cam in there or not. I will just have to remember to shut them off. Is there a louder flasher relay out there? |

My Volvo beeps incessantly until you turn the signal off......... |
pacecar 14 March 2010 10:07 PM |
The beeper in mine is barely audible over the engine. |

I don't know where it is at, but find it and take an air nozzle (blow gun) and blow it out and see if that helps. (That is assuming that your 98 and my 96 is the same design.....) |

You should hear clicking from the relay (under the CB radio access panel) and a "bleeping" (much louder) from behind the instrument cluster. On my '99 Volvo, the cluster one doesn't always work. |

Hey Rocky, Remember the white Volvo 660 that I looked at in Kansas City? (the dyno fiasco! ) That 660 had canceling turn signals. I t was the only Volvo I drove all summer that had them "functioning." |
Scubadave 15 March 2010 09:57 AM |
Us deaf people have a hard time hearing the beep from the signal over the engine. Also mine only worked part time. I ended up going to Radio Shack and buying two 12v tone generators. Wired them, one for each side, into the Hoppy I have for trailer. Ran the wire into the main cab to the best place to mount them to be able to hear them. Grand kids hate them as they are too loud |
HERO Maker 15 March 2010 10:30 AM |
Doug, that is interesting.
So is it something that can be "set", or is it just built that way or not? (the cancelling device, not the audible device) Some OTR guy could probably share why it does not cancel. |

If I recall correctly, Volvo officered cancelling turn signals as a build option. I have never seen one, though. |
D and J 15 March 2010 11:16 AM |
Looking back at that truck, they were about the only thing that worked correctly on that truck!! ROTFLMAO |
Jeff- C IL 15 March 2010 11:29 AM |
I'm curious as to why you went with the tone generators??? I would think that 2 nice big flashing red indicator lights up where you can see them would bring peace in the family and be just as good a reminder! You should be able to just swap out the tone generators for the lights, if you wired it like I think you did. |
J.W. Morgan 15 March 2010 01:27 PM |
Peterbilts have these neat lights you can mount on the mirrors, not noise and looks really cool...... |

Mine had one side, left, that canceled and one, right, that didn't. Never did entrench that in my memory and would ride around with the right signals blinking. Guess people kept wondering why in the world I would never take the exit |
DJW 15 March 2010 07:09 PM |
I generally just wait until the DW gets irritated enough and reminds me to turn it off as I can no longer hear the clicking noise. Dennis |

I'd love mine to be self-canceling. Anyone have access to a Volvo (or whoever is the manufacturer) part number? There's always a slim chance it might be reasonably priced (ok, dreaming for a moment). Dan |
J.W. Morgan 15 March 2010 07:55 PM |
Is it that hard to just turn it off after completing a turn? If you "force" yourself to do it for a month of driving you will do it out of habit. (Kind of like getting in an Automatic after driving a Manual, you look for a clutch that isn't there.) Also if you are "operating" like you are supposed to, you should notice it during your every two minute scan of the gauges for any problems that may be arising. I will pick up a CB and tell you to "Turn your blinker of idiot," I have one of those "good radios" that will get your attention if yours is turned on. |
Scrap 15 March 2010 08:02 PM |
I bet the T2 guys here never leave the blinkers on! That's one annoying blinker right there. Do you guys only steer one way when turning? The self cancellers are OK for trucks that work like that, but have it on something with a long trailer behind it and it is one of the most annoying things ever put in a truck. |
Jack Mayer 15 March 2010 08:18 PM |
Exactly, Scrap, which is why they don't belong on a real truck....and Volvo never really put them on... |

A small update to my earlier posts. I dropped my truck off at Valley Volvo yesterday afternoon, and talked about this to the shop foreman. He says that Volvo does not have self canceling turn signals, but, that "someone" offers/offered a kit to modify the stalk; adding a white colored pin to act as a canceler against the wheel.
I have no info on this modification, just adding what I heard from this shop foreman |

Reminds me of my first car, a 1951 Chevrolet Club Sedan that didn't have turn signals. The kit I added had a module that was strapped to the steering column. When the stalk was flipped down or up for a turn, a small wheel would extend from the module and contact the steering wheel hub. Turning the steering wheel rotated the small wheel and unlatched it, canceling the turn signal. |

I liked the idea of a turn indicator outside. I think I will try to copy the 70 Hemi Cuda with the small flashing light mounted out on the front fender. The Volvo is not a muscle car but it sure pulls harder than the Cuda did. |

Hey guys, my 2001 770 has factory installed (I think) self cancelling turn signal and they even work! Waz up? Mike |
HERO Maker 17 March 2010 12:14 PM |
Some guys have all the luck
Have you started those retracting steps on the passenger side yet? Take care, |
RVnBikerBob - Bob and Becky 17 March 2010 06:05 PM |
Our 770 has self cancelling turn signals too. I think it is standard on OO optioned Volvos. |

Test drove an '04 VNL last weekend, and I'm pretty sure they self canceled. I was paying attention to other things, however. |
DonF 18 March 2010 12:34 AM |
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't --- even MMMV, so surely YMMV; I usually notice as I complete a turn, when the wheel starts to return to its straight position (so, when it needs to be reset, I just nudge it). Don |

My '99 has canceling signals, but the left one only cancels intermittently. Add to it that the louder repeater relay is also intermittent and once in a while the DW needs to remind me, for some reason she can hear it better than I can. |
