ABS Repair Help

I have one of the trucks that had the 6 wheel ABS systems that was rendered inoperative when singled.  I have lived without ABS for almost 5 years now, but as a a result of a couple unpleasant experiences lately, I want it fixed.  I took the truck to Central Valley Trucks Center in Fresno and they have been struggling with the fix.  The main hang up seems to be that they can't figure out number of the correct ABS controller?  They were thinking they needed to eliminate the TCS in order to make it work, as well as do a bunch of re-plumbing of air lines.  From what I know all
they need to do is get the correct ABS controller and plug it in.  I know they make one for 4 wheels with TCS.  Does anyone know the part number?  I used to have it on the service manual CD, but I can no longer get the CD to work.

They called Wabco but were not able to get any help.

I have given them Mike Everhart's name and contact information at Central Carolina as some have suggested since he did Mark Bruss's and was knowledgeable, but so far they have not been able to contact him.
Or, does anyone have another reference I could give them who has done this fix?

I know this isn't the help you wanted, but I remember somebody on here was able to do this by putting the sensors off the 2nd axle into a second location on the existing axle.  There was another spot for a sensor 180 deg away form the existing ones, or something like that.  My guess is they left the valve for second axle plugged in but inoperative.

Can't find the link right now, but something to look into???  A LOT cheaper than a new controller.

Jeff,
I had read that a while back as well, but I no longer have any of the hardware from the removed axle.  It would have been a good approach if I had been aware of it when the truck was first singled, but I think the best approach at this point is just to get it done right.  Also, I don't know if having TCS might make a difference in how the dual sensor setup worked.  It would probably OK, but I know for sure the proper setup will be.

I called Meritor and told them what I had and they sent the four wheel Module that was a plug and play.  I'd get the number off of it but I'm in Meridian and it's in Retama, maybe you can get Jack to go over and retreive the number

Does your truck have TCS?  I know there are different numbers with and without.

Rif,
When I was singling my truck, I found and purchased a 4S/4M ABS controller on Ebay.  I just searched Ebay, and this item is no longer up for bid.  I bought a Meritor Wabco S4461062010 controller.  This number is Meritor's number, not Volvo's part number.  When I made my purchase, the guy I bought it from said he had close to a hundred of them for sale. Do a google search of K&S Trading LLC at eBay. There must be some way to contact them about one of these controllers.

I paid 400 bucks for it, and they offered a 30 day free return.

I posted here that I had a problem with my cruise control after fixing my ABS, but this turned out to be a complete coincidence.  The problem with my cruise was from the brake switch, not the ABS.

If you can't get in contact with these folks through eBay, I can PM you his e-mail address.  I wont post his e-mail without his permission.

Doug,
I looked at those when you, or someone, posted about them.  I couldn't tell if they were TCS or non TCS so I didn't feel comfortable ordering one.  Does your truck have TCS?

The person who did the upside down mounting was me (well, my mechanic did it).  I continue to feel that it is a full and complete solution to the problem.  However, I'm not a mechanic, and anyone pursuing this path needs to assure themselves that this solution is safe.

Prior to doing it, I looked into instead getting into the proper controller for my application.  List was $1700, discounted was about $1k.

It may be that a wrecker can find the parts you need for a lot less than that -- those are new prices.

Anyway, if you have any questions, let me know.

OK.  Real rookie here.  Where exactly am I going to find what you need on Hogrydr's truck?  I am still here for a few more days.

Rocky,
It should be a small box attached to the cross member just to the rear of the transmission.  Crawling around under a truck can be no fun, especially if the air is out of the system and it has a bed on it.  The box will probably say Wabco on it and it should have 2 or 3 connectors where cables from the front and rear axles plug in.

I think this is what you are looking for.  If not, let me know.  I took a shot at something else, but I think this is it, based on your instruction.  Not sure how to make this larger for you?

PM me your email address and I can send you the picture.

Jim
Your truck still looks great!  I can't believe those wheels on the truck and trailer.  I guess that's what good Alcoa wheels look like forever!!

The real concern is if your truck has ESC or not, not TCS

Open this manual from Meritor, ABS manual.  Then go to page 46 (figure 3.20) to look at pin-outs for the ABS module.  If your truck has ECS, connectors X1 and X2 will have 18 pins instead of 12 pins.

ECS is an expensive option for the ABS to also control the air brakes on the trailer.  Most trucks don't have this option.  When you install the 4m/4s controller, you just don't use connector X4 (I just wrapped my unused connector with black tape, and left all the wiring in the truck alone)

I had to start and stop the engine a few times after replacing the module for all the ABS faults to clear.  Maybe there is a faster way, but it only took 3-4 times of cycling the engine on and off.

Mine does not have ECS.  In fact, I don't know if it was even available in 2000.

I have sent the photo to the service writer.  I'll let you all know what I hear back from them.
Thanks all

I just heard back from the service writer.  That did the trick.  The quoted price is $687 -- lot's less than I expected.

Well I did bring down a towell to clean up the unit in question, but you know how that little breeze is down here.  While I was squeezing my svelte little bod under your truck, the towell went the other way.  Actually, it was easy to do the project.  Glad I'm not crawling under there tomorrow.  Triple digits planned!

I'm going to miss you again bro. Probably out of here on Monday or Tuesday.

I can assure you there are no Volvos with Meritor Wabco ESC.
