OK what have I done? 2001 KW T2000 with an AutoShift, turned it off in D (3rd gear). Now it won't past 5th gear. What's up? I have tried to reset by turning off the truck, but no help so far. Would un-hooking the battery help?

HI MIKE!
I also have that problem some times. It seems like it forgets where it is, or maybe gets more than one command at a time.
There was someone on here last week with a T2000 AutoShift, same year as yours. However "I" never heard the out come. Maybe someone else will chine in with and answer. Sorry I cant help!!

I am told when all else fails with one of these "AutoShift" problems, last-resort-desperation play is running around the truck naked swinging a chicken overhead.........................
When Phoenix senses I am contemplating that, it suddenly responds (gratefully).

Cowhunter if getting naked and swinging the chicken doesn't do it , then disconnecting the battery is a good start, when turning the key on after trying the battery disconnect, have the clutch engaged), if no go there, .I'd
probably try cleaning the connector to the hi range shift motor, the one laying perpendicular to the tranny east-west, (a good idea to clean them all while under the truck and coat with dielectric grease). You probably got it confused stopping in gear, even though it is supposed to go to neutral when the keys is turned back on, it may have gotten hung up and just needs a little help to get free. .Or worst case the shift motors are getting weak, i hope this is not the problem, about $600, for the motors, but easy to replace. I hope this helps ....JMHO

Well if it let the starter run that is a good thing because that means it made it back to neutral. How about Emery's range shifting check? In R with the foot on the brakes will it shift between R1 and R2?

Hey Mike
I'm new here but I had a 2001 T2000 w/N14 auto/shift. I had the same problem that you are having and just kept playing around with it until it worked. Then after a while it started to happen more and more often.
I finally broke down and replaced the touchpad and never had a problem after that, unless of course you have a GEN 1 in that truck. Also check for low battery voltage, I had a problem with one battery, the truck worked fine otherwise but the dead cell in the one battery caused the A/S some issues.

Thanks’ for all the help and negative mental images!
I tried all the plugs, which all looked great with plenty of dielectric grease, disconnecting the power but nothing worked. When the truck was shut off and restarted, the "service" light on the shift pad would light (and later go off) and the forward gear(2nd or 3rd) would engage, disengage, reengage, disengage and finally engage. Once 3rd was fully engaged, the tranny wouldn't shift at all, until it was driven for a mile or two, then only up as far as 5th.
I was thinking it was the shift brain, as it had multiple "issues", not just loss of the top 5 gears. I wonder how much that little CPU costs?
So I was 290 miles from home in GA, with horses that needed to get home yesterday. So I started out yesterday afternoon, traveling in non-existent traffic on US41 South bound out of Unadilla, in 5th gear at 21mph, with emergency flashers blaring. About 5 agonizing hours later, I stopped for dinner, when the truck was restarted the first attempt was a mis-engaged starter stall (which bogged down the batteries), it started fine on the second attempt and I hit the road. I noticed that it locked-up 3rd without a problem (good sign) and then it shifted right through the gears to 10th. Seems to be working fine now!
Several observations:
1) 21 mph is damn slow!
2) Hills are your friend (I hit 46 on the biggest one)!
3) A semi emergency flasher is damn loud!
4) When you are having truck problems, eat sooner!

Cowhunter,
Sounds like the range solenoid pack, one of the coils in the shift pack might be the problem. When I replaced mine it was around $180, four bolts and it's out. Worth a try.

Cowhunter and all, here is a photo of the AutoShift, maybe it'll help trouble
