Hi everyone. I have a 1998 Eaton 10 speed auto shift transmission.  It stays in the neutral position on the indicator.  The shifter panel is lit, it has power to it but it won't go into any gears.  It remains in neutral. If anyone has any advice to give or maybe a possible diagnosis I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks!
Mike

The "wrenches" will have some additional suggestions, but the very first thing I would do is to pull all the connectors underneath, examine them for any damage, and then spray the Heck out of them with contact cleaner.  Even if that is not the end-problem it is something you should do in this situation.

Hi Mike
Welcome to the board.

Several things could cause this:
Input shift sensor ..
The electric shift motor
Transmission itself
Gear selector sensor
Inertia brake
clutch brake

But if I were you, I would take Jacks suggestion first and clean the connectors with contact cleaner and then coat them with dielectric grease .......JMO

I have a 2000 KW with a 1st gen Auto Shift.  Every once in a while if I'm not shifting smartly I confuse the computer.  1st drive then quickly back to reverse then back to drive.  This kind of thing happens either trying to pull out onto the road, I go then someone pulls out of and other drive, now its not safe to go then the guy stops and waves me on.  If you think I'm confused at this point the tranny/computer just says NO.  Now the tractor/toter is stuck in the right lane while the trailer is totally off the road out of site, and they all come by firing eyeballs and fingers at me. I Still Can't Move. Now what??? I've s totally shut it down, what to do. 3-4 minutes, AH ? well I'll try it again, otherwise its a call to COACH-NET. VROOM Heh its shifting again.  It hasn't done it since OCTOBER in KS. I will say every once in a while its like it cant make up its mind what gear to go into, that is mostly in the lower start up gears 2-5.  Usually its me that confuses it, I'm getting better.

All that said, your question, Jack is right connections is the first place to start.  Its been a while but in the past there have been problems with the XY switch.  Don't want that.
I wish you the best!

Mike,
Do I understand correctly you are able to move the shift lever to D or R, but the truck does not go into gear?  If so, it could be that your clutch brake is worn or has failed.  Also, be sure the idle speed is not set too high as that makes it more difficult to get things stopped.  In addition to electrical issues, another possibility is hydraulics, assuming you have a hydraulic clutch.  The master or slave could be the problem.

I recently went through this same problem.  The truck had worked great for 4 years but the clutch brake failed completely.  In the end I replaced everything; hydraulics and a complete clutch job.  I know that is one thing I won't ever have to deal with again, and I don't have to worry about being stranded somewhere.

Took and unexpected tour of Vanguard Volvo Monday afternoon.  Net's Gen 11 didn't want to find a gear from neutral.  Clutch actuation seemed different too.  The problem occurred mostly after long road time, full temp, pull off exit or into campground and poof, no go.  Shut it off and it would go into gear.  I reviewed earlier posts in regard to this and felt I should have the clutch brake adjustment checked.  It was within spec's but nearly all friction material gone!  Now have a new clutch brake.  Only went from Tucson to Yuma today (1/2 a Jacks day...120mi.).  Seems to
work well.  The shop stayed to quote and the tech was real good.  Thursday we leave for Washington.  Total estimated round trip mileage 6000 miles!

Jay, that is what you get (fast) when pushing the clutch to the floor when you should not be.....(not saying you did it....)

Thanks everyone for the replies.  I am probably going to check it out today or tomorrow.  Seems to me when the clutch brake would be out of adjustment that the indicator would blink in D or R when selected, but just wouldn't drop in.  Mine, however, stays in the N position on the indicator when the shift lever is put in any gear.  Does not blink or anything, just remains in N position.  Leaning towards Input Shaft Sensor or dirty connections.  I will clean connections and try to find where the sensor is. (Any ideas??)
Thanks! Mike

I'm with you on that one Mike - if it is not the connectors the input shaft sensor is the first one I would check, too.

Good luck and let us know what you find.  You will become "one" with your truck during this "adventure".
