I recently purchased a Volvo HDT and 53' drop deck trailer which is already converted to RV. I've tried several of the recommended insurance agents and so far have not had any luck. Currently the truck is only purchased and I have not completed title/registration paperwork through South Dakota.
Dougherty & Associates, Inc. (agent for my other vehicles in SD) declined "We did some research & found out that we do not have any carriers that will insure a homemade conversion RV." Progressive Insurance - declined but I don't recall the reason, Thum Insurance - they checked with three brokers and have received negative feedback from two (still waiting to hear from 3rd). Reason for declining: "The trailer is 53 feet long and was used for long haul trucking at one time." GMAC - declined but I don't recall the reason Farm City - will not write for 53' trailer Garden City Insurance - does not write in SD Explorer Insurance Agency (recommended by Garden City) - "I submitted your photos to National Interstate and just heard back from them. Unfortunately they cannot offer you a quote at this time due to the gross vehicle weight of your truck & trailer and due to your truck having dual rear axles." State Farm Agent in SD - declined as they do not insure full time RV - said they do sometimes make exceptions for existing customers. I MUST be going about this the wrong way? Any suggestions would be welcome! |

How is the trailer registered and titled? Have you had it appraised or inspected by any 3rd party entity or state agency?
If you are trying to insure a commercial trailer by it's VIN#, it is going to be less than easy. I have a 48' drop deck similar to yours and needed to have it inspected before it could be insured as a stand alone policy/asset. If you have the truck insured as a motorhome or toterhome, several underwriters will allow you to have the truck's policy extend to what ever it is towing. Progressive offered us $2,500 as their standard extension to the trailer, we had the option to increase which we did. The trailer still needed to be appraised for value if we wanted it to covered for theft or anything above the truck policy's standard limit allowances. |

National Interstate took care of my one off 46' custom 5er, with the service truck or the FL112 pulling it. No Problems. |

I looked at your album. Totally Awesome! I especially like the way you used your workbenches as a platform for your ATV. |

I did not know that State Farm didn't insure fulltimers, so it is fortunate for me that I am an existing customer - they have insured, without question, all of the five rigs I have full timed in, including the HDT I just bought, today. Interestingly, my first full time rig, was home made, by me, on a 53ft drop deck trailer, that they insured also without question. Maybe you could try a different agent? |

Although my trailer is only 35 foot I got my insurance without jumping through any hoops. I'm insured with Country Insurance. Of course they insure everything I have and I have been with them for 35 years. |

Dave The trailer and truck were most recently registered for commercial use though the owner previously had it registered as RV (both with State Farm Insurance). I am in the process of having it registered in SD as RV (both truck and trailer separately). I have not had it appraised or done anything else because until I can get insurance it will remain at the sellers location in MN. RandyA Wild Bill Several writers have declined due to dual rear axle as they still consider it heavy commercial truck. Hopefully I can work something out - this form looks to be a great resource for HDT and I'm sure I'll have more questions once I get going! |

I signed full timer RV policy today with RV America Insurance.
Full coverage with 250/500/100 limits and $500 deductible was $1316 for one year. For reference I'm 34, single, don't own a home, have a clean driving record, and do not have a CDL. Thanks to all for your input! |

Russell, I just had a chance to go through your pictures and that is a cool setup. Also it is nice to see another "kid" my age hanging around here! |

Does this mean the HDT forum is getting younger? Very nice rig, lot's of fun can come from a setup like that. I've thought about drive on workbenches for ours. I've been looking at 4 post lifts to get the toys to the second floor, never thought about just simple ramps to get them up there. Very good solution with minimal costs to set it up. I am going to have to look into something similar for ours, remaining modular and adaptive to various loads is a great way to do it. |

Don't worry about it Dave and Pipe - It is something that time WILL cure. AND faster than you think with those little gremlins running around. Sooner than you think, you too will be saying "Why just the other day....... and it was 25 years ago." The voice of experience.
Another thing that you will notice....... Instead of eating an x-large pizza, or ordering something for the rest of the family, you and the wife will be splitting a ham and cheese omelet and still take some home for tomorrow. I don't understand it, but it happens. Take my word for it. LOL |
