Progressive Insurance Canceled

Underwriter said Volvo "Inappropriate Vehicle"

I went on-line at the Progressive Insurance site in mid Jan and bought insurance for the Volvo VNL670 as a RV.  The information I gave was full and accurate - it was accepted as well as a payment of $477 for a full year of insurance with collision and comprehensive.  I received a policy and insurance cards about a week later.

I called Progressive last night with the intent of raising my liability coverage.  The customer service rep informed me my policy was being canceled effective 2-15-2010.  This was news to me.  Anyway, some underwriter at Progressive came back with a statement that the Volvo was an "inappropriate" vehicle for RV coverage.

I got ticked off and told them to cancel immediately - if this was their way of doing business I wanted NOTHING to do with them for ANY vehicle.  They should NEVER have accepted the coverage and issued a policy to begin with!

I then contacted RV America Insurance which is the company that brokered insurance for my 5th wheel through National Interstate Insurance Company almost two years ago.  National Interstate is rated "A, Excellent" by A.M. Best Company.  They (Interstate) are more than glad to insure our trucks but they refer to them as MDT's.

Anyway, my retainer was written, signed and I had my proof of insurance cards in less than an hour.  The liability rates were better than I had with Progressive.

Progressive Insurance needs to change their name to REgressive NONsurance.  The policy NEVER should have been written to begin with if it was for an "inappropriate" vehicle.

If you are looking for insurance for your truck you might want to give RV America Insurance a call.  It does not need to be converted to a motor home, it only needs to be part of a RV rig - the tow vehicle - to be classified as a RV for insurance purposes.

Thank you for the *warning* as I'm a "REgressive"(rolls eyes) client and have been for over 5 yrs.  However, I have yet to get so far as to see what they would do for me with regards to an HDT/RV conversion.  (Sigh) I'll say I was very happy w/Dairyland for the cycle several years ago.(But that's a big tangent) (snickers) guarantied I'll be filing this data away for real anyways.

I had Allstate do an early cancellation years ago.  They've had none of my business since.

I've had Progressive for several years.  MY Volvo is registered and titled as a motorhome, never received an early termination notice.  They did write the initial policy for a Volvo station wagon.  We are with Progressive Direct, which is painful to deal with at times, but they actually answer the phone unlike most insurance agents I hear about here.  Even better is they are reachable after 5pm.  Doesn't make them any better beyond that single convenience, I still don't trust what they say, only what is in writing.  We have automatic payment with Progressive, until they stop pulling money out of the account, they are bound to provide the coverages the policy states.  I don't like them at all, far too big and easy to get lost in their system.  For $500 a year for policy we have with the Volvo by itself, I have yet to find better rates or coverages.  Once I start driving the truck more than just enough to keep the fluids and seals moved around again, I'll likely dump them too.

I'm not a believer that any insurance agency or agent is truly better than the next.  I've hears great and pathetic stories about the same exact agents and underwriters from reliable friends.  All of them are out for profit, not your interest, no sense in kidding yourself.

National Interstate.  Not really to sure about them either.  The end of November '09, got the insurance form in the mail, policy has come due for our car.  Paid it, sent it in.  Got the proof of insurance and card in the mail a few weeks later.  Good to go?  Nope.  A week later get a letter in the mail they have cancelled the policy of the car on my request.  Huh?  I called them up, they looked into it.  Someone screwed up they would take care of it.  A week later another letter, they have canceled the policy on my request.  Call again.  They will take care of it.  Last month a check comes in the mail from the cancelation of the car policy.  Call them up again.  I'm to send the check back.  They will take care of it.  I'm still covered.  Or so they say.  Truck and trailer renewal policy came in the mail.  Have sent it in with payment Feb. 1st.  Will see what happens with that.

Question!!
Does the last line mean you MUST have 5th wheel connected to be covered?  This is what Progressive tried to tell me before I left them.

Progressive does not require a 5th wheel to be connected.  We don't even own a 5th wheel anymore.  I started our policy in Georgia with just the truck, started another policy in Alabama with just the truck again.  Their lack of knowing their own rules is the worst part of them for me.  We got policy statements constantly that we challenged and ended up getting a reversal on their original notices.  Now I just fax their own references back to them, which they once again send me written notice that I am correct and the truck does not need a RV trailer attached to be insured.  I pushed it further to make sure they cover anything I am pulling so long as it belongs to me and is not a commercial endeavor.  They approve of my 48' Wabash trailer, which is about as much as a test for a private policy based underwriter to stand behind anyone here could ask for.

Good question, Robb.
When I started out on the phone with Bill, the rep from RV America Insurance (the broker company) he said getting insurance as a vehicle converted to MH was time consuming because photos were needed and often refused by his companies.  Having the Volvo insured as a toter that's purpose is to pull the fifth wheel was "about" the same rate as a MH and extremely easy to get from Interstate.  My application for insurance (E-mailed to me) was for a RV.

BTW -My SD title says "Converted" for vehicle type.  My registration says Motor Home.

So, I think it is safe to conclude that the truck must be able to pull a towable with some type of hitch to get the RV type insurance.

Why don't you give them a call at the link I provided and see what they say?

David,
In as much that my policy was reviewed by a single underwriter and he canceled it based on Progressive Vehicle type rules, another underwriter might have missed this and let it go.  I am sure they have hundreds of underwriters reviewing polices.  I certainly would not want to stay insured with a company that could cancel at any minute based on vehicle type and who looks at the policy!!!

Of course, they may have a computer program by now that catches "Volvo" with the 4V4 introductory VIN number...... Who Knows???????

BTW - when I had my temporary VA 30 day tags my local State Farm agent was glad to insure the vehicle as a regular truck.  Unfortunately, they could not write insurance for SD.

Side note Dave K.  Can we PM/E-mail sometime soon about those specific Progressive "policy notes" you use?
Thanks in advance.

RV America Insurance

RandyA When you got your paper work from RV America Insurance, who was the company that wrote the insurance?  I have been with them since March of 2005 and Progressive is the company that has the insurance.  I know that when I bought the insurance in 2005, my local independent agent who sells Progressive referred me to RV America Insurance.  He stated that Progressive would only insure through RV America.

I just got my renewal and paid it today. No claims since being with them.
